About us

A commitment to learning and to change

Some aspects of the Springfield Centre havent changed since we started in 1995. We seek as we always have - to marry a strong business perspective with knowledge of the development context and a commitment to wider development objectives. We continue to work with a broad range of organisations in different contexts. And we remain based in the university town of Durham in North East England.

But from the outset the Springfield Centre has been about promoting change. Change, not for its own sake, but because change based on valid learning is the only way in which private sector development practice can be improved - and our impact increased.

We have taken a leading role in changing thinking and practice in key areas of private sector development such as in business services and in the emergence of market development as an overarching framework for analysis and action.

Our training programmes are innovative and unique concentrating on new insights, developments and methods.

Our focus is on intervention design, development, backstopping and review. We dont seek to implement large-scale projects and therefore are able to maintain an independent perspective and to question practice in a way that others cannot.

The combination of training, research and consultancy allows us ground our work both in conceptual rigour and practical reality and, in doing so, to address the strategic direction of interventions and their operational context.

Our clients include major bilateral donor organisations such as DFID, SDC, USAID and GTZ; multilateral agencies such as the ILO and the World Bank; and a range of large international contractors.

We have worked in more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe and have particular longer-term working relationships in Bangladesh, Indonesia, South Africa and the Balkans.
