'Making Markets Work' programmes in 2012 In 2012 we will offer our annual 2-week 'Making Markets Work' programme in Glasgow, UK (15th to 27th July 2012). Depending upon demand for this first event we may also offer a second 2-week 'Making Markets Work' programme in late 2012 - same structure and pricing as the July event but in a different location (likely to be in Asia). Details of the Glasgow programme will be formally advertised in early 2012.
Welcome to Tim Stewart We are pleased to introduce our new team member, Tim Stewart, who joined us in October. Tim joins us after eight years with Mercy Corps where he has played a leading role in taking the M4P approach into their work, especially in agriculture markets, and most recently in Georgia. Tim will continue to be based in Georgia but is a 100% member of the Springfield team!
New Springfield Centre team member We are pleased to introduce our new team member – Kevin Seely – who joined us in July. Before starting at the Springfield Centre, Kevin worked for the Donor Committee for Enterprise Development (DCED), on results measurement and private sector development more generally. His academic background is in political and economic development. Kevin speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
Glasgow 2011 Making Markets Work programme - September We look forward to welcoming participants to this 2-week event in Glasgow, which starts on 4th September. The event has been sold out for some time now from the overspill of applications to our event in July.
M4P materials now available in French The three documents (Synthesis, Perspectives, Operational Guide) on the making markets work for the poor (M4P) approach have now been translated into French. The documents are available on the SDC website: http://www.sdc-employment-income.ch/en/Home/Making_Markets_Work_for_the_Poor/Resources_on_the_M4P_approach
New addition to the Springfield Centre team We are delighted to introduce our new team member - Roger Oakeley - who joined us in July. Roger has a background in rural development planning and agricultural economics, and has supported a wide range of projects and programmes as a consultant, trainer and researcher in agriculture and livestock development. Roger works with us on a part-time capacity whilst he also leads a multi-donor knowledge management support facility for market systems development approaches.
New M4P facility - your views please DFID, SDC and Sida have established an initiative to strengthen knowledge management and exchange amongst M4P stakeholders. The purpose of this is to increase understanding of M4P in policy and practice and stimulate the exchange of knowledge and experiences amongst the growing numbers of practitioners worldwide. The initiative aims to develop an information hub to catalyse the ongoing networking and knowledge exchange efforts of people involved in M4P and to put mechanisms in place to support those efforts. Precisely how this will work - what services and activities it will entail - is part of an inception planning process currently underway but will very much be a reflection of the needs and priorities of potential users.
The value of this initiative to the development of M4P approaches and their application is considerable, and hence The Springfield Centre is keen to support efforts to ensure that it is genuinely demand-led. We would greatly encourage you to take a few minutes to complete the following short demand survey on Survey Monkey (which will close on October 17th). The Survey aims to build a better understanding of where people interested in M4P currently get information from and what types of forums they find most valuable.

Many thanks on behalf of the inception team – and watch out for news of the formal launch of this initiative later in the year!
Alumni group on Facebook We have launched an alumni group on Facebook to facilitate networking amongst participants of our M4P training programmes. The group is available to anyone who has previously attended one of our training programmes (the majority of you will already have received an email from us on this subject). If we have lost touch with you and you'll like to join then either do a group search on Facebook for 'Springfield Centre Training Programme Alumni' or email us for instructions (global@springfieldcentre.com). We are hoping for some lively discussions!
New material on M4P available Three new documents on the making markets work for the poor (M4P) approach have been published by SDC and DFID: (1) the M4P Synthesis – a summary of the key arguments for and features of the approach; (2) Perspectives on M4P – eight papers positioning M4P in relation to different fields of development and (3) the M4P Operational Guide – a more detailed resource document on how to put the approach into practice. These documents were launched at events in Asia and Africa in late-2008 and early-2009 and should be a useful resource in improving the application of M4P and taking it forward into new areas. The Springfield Centre coordinated the development of each of these in conjunction with a range of advisors. The documents are available on our website (Resources/Springfield papers)
