PrOpCom Nigeria, October 2011

This case study details the experience of the PrOpCom programme in developing the market for commercially-provided tractor services in Nigeria to address the dual issue of the spiralling costs of land preparation among smallholders and the opportunity foregone of under-utilised land, particularly in the off-season. To do so, the programme largely worked to incite commercial banks to develop appropriate financial products that enabled prospective service providers to purchase a new tractor, complete with warranty, from distributors. The case tells the story of the pilot phase of this project, with a particular focus on what PrOpCom did, why, and, importantly, how they did it.
